Oil Pulling: The Ancient Ayurvedic Cleansing Morning Ritual You Need to Implement

This is another Ayurvedic cleansing ritual that I learned during my yoga teacher training. I have done it over the years - love the effect but haven’t kept it up. I use it sparingly as an additional practice when I am feeling I need an immunity boost.

Traditionally you are told to use sesame or coconut oil - either are fine. Both of these oils have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which may help decrease and prevent harmful bacteria overgrowth in your mouth - boosting your immunity.

I always used coconut oil. In colder climates coconut oil is solid at room temperature, which is actually a bit easier to scoop into your mouth.

  1. Before you drink water or brush your teeth.
  2. Put a large spoonful of oil in your mouth and swish around for at least a few minutes, up to 20 minutes.
  3. The oil is pulling toxins out of your entire mouth, tongue and teeth.
  4. When finished - do not swallow - spit into the garbage - not down the drain because it will likely clog it.
  5. If you are practicing both rituals - oil pull, then scrape your tongue, brush and drink warm water.
